Dana Lixenberg (nata nel 1964 ad Amsterdam) è una fotografa olandese.

Originariamente la Lixenberg si trasferì a New York come ragazza alla pari e lì scoprì la fotografia ad un corso serale. Decise poi di studiare fotografia alla Gerrit Rietveld Academy e al London College of Printing, ritornando poi a vivere e lavorare a New York nel 1990.

La svolta negli Stati Uniti arrivò nel 1993, quando le sue fotografie dei residenti del distretto di Watts a Los Angeles, pubblicate su Vrij Nederland, catturarono l’attenzione della rivista Vibe di New York.

Il marchio di fabbrica della Lixenberg è una fotocamera 4×5 e il treppiede. Si diverte ad illustrare i contrasti nel suo lavoro e a ritrarre le persone. La Lixenberg fotografa persone appartenenti a tutte le classi sociali, come viene illustrato nel suo libro United States del 2001. Dana Lixenberg (b. 1964, Amsterdam) is a Dutch photographer.

Lixenberg originally went to New York to become an au pair and then discovered photography at a night school class. She decided to study photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the London College of Printing, returning to live and work in New York in 1990.

Her breakthrough in the U.S. came in 1993, when her quintessential photographs of residents in the Watts section of Los Angeles, published in Vrij Nederland, caught the attention of New York’s Vibe magazine.

Lixenberg’s trademark is a 4×5 camera and tripod. She enjoys illustrating contrast in her work and portraying people in pure form. Lixenberg photographs people from all social classes, as her 2001 book United States illustrates. In addition to ordinary people, Lixenberg has photographed a number of American celebrities, including Prince and Whitney Houston.

Lixenberg is also a film director and directed the Dutch singer Anouk’s 2005 video ‘One Word’

All’età di 15 anni, Alex Majoli si unì allo Studio F45 di Ravenna, dove collaborò con Daniele Casadio. Mentre studiava all’Istituto d’Arte di Ravenna, iniziò a collaborare con l’Agenzia Grazia Neri e si recò in Yugoslavia per documentare il conflitto. Vi tornò molte volte negli anni seguenti per coprire i principali eventi in Kosovo e Albania.

Majoli si è diplomato alla Scuola d’Arte nel 1991. Tre anni più tardi, produsse una rappresentazione molto intima della chiusura di un istituto psichiatrico sull’isola di Leros, in Grecia, un progetto che si trasformò nel suo primo libro, Leros

Nel 1995 Majoli andò in Sud America per diversi mesi, per fotografare una varietà di soggetti per un suo progetto personale, “Requiem in Samba”. Nel 1998 cominciò a lavorare al progetto “Hotel Marinum”, sulla vita nelle città portuali in tutto il mondo, il cui obiettivo finale era la produzione di una rappresentazione teatrale multimediale. Nello stesso anno cominciò a girare una serie di cortometraggi e documentari.

Dopo essere diventato un membro di Magnum Photos nel 2001, Majoli coprì la caduta del regime Talebano in Afghanistan e, due anni dopo, l’invasione dell’Iraq. Continua a documentare i diversi conflitti a livello mondiale per Newsweek, il New York Time Magazine,. Granta e National geographic.

Majoli, in collaborazione con Thomas Dworzak, Paolo Pellegrin e Ilkka Uimonen, tenne una mostra e un’installazione di grande successo Off Broadway a New York nel 2004, che girò la Francia e la Germania. In seguito si occupò di un progetto per il Ministero della Cultura francese intitolato “BPS”, o “Bio-Position System”, sulla trasformazione sociale della città di Marsiglia. Un progetto recentemente completato, “Libera me”, è una riflessione sulla condizione umana.

Nel 2008 riunisce un gruppo di validi fotografi italiani nel collettivo Cesura.

At the age of 15, Alex Majoli joined the F45 Studio in Ravenna, working alongside Daniele Casadio. While studying at the Art Institute in Ravenna, he joined Grazia Neri Agency and traveled to Yugoslavia to document the conflict. He returned many times over the next few years, covering all major events in Kosovo and Albania.

Majoli graduated from art school in 1991. Three years later, he made an intimate portrayal of the closing of an asylum for the insane on the island of Leros, Greece, a project that became the subject of his first book, Leros.

In 1995 Majoli went to South America for several months, photographing a variety of subjects for his ongoing personal project, ‘Requiem in Samba’. He started the project ‘Hotel Marinum’ in 1998, on life in harbour cities around the world, the final goal of which was to perform a theatrical multimedia show. That same year he began making a series of short films and documentaries.

After becoming a full member of Magnum Photos in 2001, Majoli covered the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, and two years later the invasion of Iraq. He continues to document various conflicts worldwide for Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, Granta and National Geographic.

Majoli, in collaboration with Thomas Dworzak, Paolo Pellegrin and Ilkka Uimonen, had an extremely successful exhibition and installation Off Broadway in New York in 2004, which travelled to France and Germany. He then became involved in a project for the French Ministry of Culture entitled ‘BPS’, or ‘Bio-Position System’, about the social transformation of the city of Marseilles. A recently completed project, ‘Libera me’, is a reflection on the human condition.

Jehao Su ha studiato Fotografia alla Beijing Film Academy. Le sue opere sono state esibite in diverse mostre collettive ed individuali in Europa, Nord America e Asia, in location quali Musée du quai Branly, Benaki Museum, UNM Art Museum, Derby QUAD Gallery, Belfast Cultúrlann, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Newspace Center for Photography, United Photo Industries HQ Gallery, Actual Size Los Angeles. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato su pubblicazioni quali The New Yorker, British Journal of Photography, Blink, GUP, Voice of Photography, China Life Magazine, Chinese Photography, Aura Magazine.

SU è stato finalista all’APA / Lucie Foundation Scholarship nel 2014. E’ stato incluso tra gli Ones to Watch 2015 dal British Journal of Photography, così come tra i Magnum 30 Under 30. Recentemente ha ricevuto un Arte Creative Award dal Düsseldorf Photo Weekend, un IdeasTap Award dal Format Festival, un Grand Prize da Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards, e un secondo posto al PMH 2015 Grant.

Olivo Barbieri (nato nel 1954 a Carpi, Emilia Romagna) è un artista italiano e fotografo di ambienti urbani. Vive e lavora a Milano
E’ riconosciuto per la sue tecnica innovativa nella creazione di miniature fotografiche da paesaggi reali, simulando una bassa profondità di campo attraverso l’uso di lenti tilt-shift. La tecnica di Barbieri simulma la poca profondità di campito della fotografia macro inclinando l’angolo della lente sul piano posteriore della fotocamera, così creando una sfocatura graduale nei bordi parti superiori e inferiori o destro e sinistro della fotografia. La tecnica viene chiamata “fuoco selettivo” e l’effetto ottenuto è che l’immagine di una città reale sembra l’immagine di un plastico.
Barbieri cominciò la sua carriera fotografica studiando al DAMS (Discipline delle Arti della Musica e dello Spettacolo) presso la facoltà di Arte e Umanistica dell’Università di Bologna. Dopo il 1971, il suo interesse per la fotografia crebbe e, inizialmente, focalizzò la sua ricerca sull’illuminazione artificiale. Nel 1978 espose il suo lavoro in diverse mostre in Italia e all’estero. Nel 1989 cominciò a viaggiare regolarmente in Estremo Oriente, particolarmente in Cina.

Nel 1993, 1995 e 1997 Barbieri espose le sue opere alla Biennale di Venezia, oltre che in altre mostre a livello internazionale, e in gallerie e musei in Europa, Nord America e Cina. Nel 1996, il Museum Folkwang di Essen, Germania, dedicò una retrospettiva al suo lavoro, che fa parte di diverse collezioni di musei nel mondo.

Olivo Barbieri (born 1954 in Carpi, Emilia-Romagna) is an Italian artist and photographer of urban environments. He lives and works in Milan

He is recognized for his innovative technique creating miniature still photography  from actual landscapes by simulating shallow depth of field via the use of tilt-shift lens photography. Barbieri’s technique simulates the shallow depth of field effect of macro photography by tilting the lens’s angle to the back plane of the camera, which creates a gradual blurring at the top and bottom edges, or left and right edges of the filmed image. The technique is called selected focus and the effect is that a picture of an actual city looks like the picture of a model.

Barbieri began his career in photography studying at DAMS (Drama, Art and Music Studies) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Bologna. After 1971, his interest in photography grew and, initially, he focused his research on artificial lighting. In 1978, he took part in several exhibitions in Italy and also abroad. In 1989 he started to travel regularly to the Far East, particularly to China.

In 1993, 1995 and 1997 Barbieri exhibited his work at the Venice Biennale, among other international exhibitions, and in galleries and museums throughout Europe, North America, and China. In 1996, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, devoted a retrospective to his work, which has been collected by museums worldwide.

In 2003 Barbieri started the Site Specific project (photos and films) describing cities like Rome, Turin, Montreal, Amman, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Siviglia, New York and others. He has realised several 35mm films within this project:

Nato a Marsiglia, Antoine d’Agata lasciò la Francia nel 1983 e rimase oltreoceano per i successivi 10 anni. Trovandosi a New York nel 1990, cominciò ad interessarsi alla fotografia frequentando corsi all’ International Center of Photography, con insegnanti del calibro di Larry Clark e Nan Goldin, tra gli altri.

Durante la sua esperienza newyorchese, negli anni 1991-1992, D’Agata lavorò come stagista nel dipartimento editoriale di Magnum ma, nonostante le sue esperienze e la sua formazione statunitense, dopo il suo ritorno in Francia nel 1993, si prese una pausa di 4 anni dalla fotografia. Born in Marseilles, Antoine d’Agata left France in 1983 and remained overseas for the next ten years. Finding himself in New York in 1990, he pursued an interest in photography by taking courses at the International Center of Photography, where his teachers included Larry Clark and Nan Goldin.

During his time in New York , in 1991-92, d’Agata worked as an intern in the editorial department of Magnum, but despite his experiences and training in the US, after his return to France in 1993 he took a four-year break from photography. His first books of photographs, De Mala Muerte and Mala Noche, were published in 1998, and the following year Galerie Vu began distributing his work. In 2001 he published Hometown, and won the Niépce Prize for young photographers. He continued to publish regularly: Vortex and Insomnia appeared in 2003, accompanying his exhibition 1001 Nuits, which opened in Paris in September; Stigma was published in 2004, and Manifeste in 2005.

In 2004 d’Agata joined Magnum Photos and in the same year, shot his first short film, Le Ventre du Monde (The World’s Belly); this experiment led to his long feature film Aka Ana, shot in 2006 in Tokyo.

Since 2005 Antoine d’Agata has had no settled place of residence but has worked around the world.

Jacob Aue Sobol

Jacob Aue Sobol (nato nel 1976) è un fotografo danese. Ha lavorato in giro per il mondo, incluso Groenlandia dell’est, Guatemala, Tokyo, Bangkok e Copenhagen.
Nel 2007 Sobol è entrato a far parte dei fotografi di Magnum Photos. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti in diverse mostre, in particolare alla Yossi Milo Gallery a New York e alla Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery a Londra.

Nato a Copenhagen, Jacob Aue Sobol ha vissuto in Canada dal 1994 al 1995. Di ritorno in Europa, ha inizialmente frequentato l’European Film College e dal 1998 ha studiato presso Fatamorgana, la Scuola Danese di Fotografia d’ Arte.
Nell’autunno del 1999, si è recato nella remota Groenlandia dell’est, nel villaggio di Tiniteqilaaq per fotografare. L’anno successivo è ritornato sulle montagne del Guatemala, questa volta da solo. Ha vissuto per un mese con una famiglia indigena per documentare la loro vita di tutti i giorni.

Nel 2006 si è trasferito a Tokyo, dove ha vissuto e lavorato per i successivi 18 mesi, esplorando la città. Le immagini di questo progetto sono tate presentate a I, Tokyo. Born in Copenhagen, Jacob Aue Sobol lived in Canada from 1994 to 1995. Back in Europe he first studied at the European Film College and from 1998 at Fatamorgana, the Danish School of Art Photography.

In the autumn of 1999 he went to the remote East Greenland village of Tiniteqilaaq to photograph. The visit was only supposed to last a few weeks but after meeting a local girl, Sabine, he returned the following year and stayed there for the next two years, living the life of a fisherman and hunter.

In 2004 Sobol published Sabine, which in photographs and narrative portrays Sabine and describes his encounter with Greenlandic culture. The pictures in the book express the photographic idiom he developed at Fatamorgana.

In the summer of 2005, Sobol went with a film crew to Guatemala to make a documentary about a young Mayan girl’s first trip to the ocean. The following year he returned to the mountains of Guatemala, this time by himself. He stayed with an indigenous family for a month to document their everyday life.

In 2006 he moved to Tokyo where he lived and worked for the next 18 months, investigating the city. The pictures from this project were presented in I, Tokyo. Commenting on the book, Miranda Gavin appreciates how “the sensitivity of his approach shines through the work and sets him apart as one of a new generation of photographers with the ability to allow eroticism and danger to seep through his images without becoming sordid or clichéd.

Jacob Aue Sobol became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2007.

In 2008, Sobol worked in Bangkok where he photographed children fighting for survival in the Sukhumvit slums, despite the country’s growing economic prosperity. In 2009, he moved back to Copenhagen.
